Key Concept: The Beatitudes are eight teachings that describe the Reign of God that Jesus announced when he lived on Earth. The Beatitudes show you how to live and act as a follower of Jesus.

Key Concept: The Great Commandment is to love God with all your heart, strength, and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. The Theological Virtues of faith, hope, and charity help us to love God and grow closer to him.

Discover:  Praying for others is one way we follow Jesus’ example and share blessings.  We just finished talking about how Jesus’ Beatitudes show the way to true happiness and tell us how we should live in God’s Kingdom.  Now we’ll explore what Jesus teaches about following the Great Commandment.

• Read pages 190-191:  Read these pages carefully and think about how Mary and Joseph must have felt when they thought Jesus was lost.  When you look at the picture on page 190 does that express how happy they were when he was found?
• How did Jesus continue to live out the Fourth Commandment?
• Draw or write something that you and your family enjoy doing together.
• Pages 192-193:  The Sixth and Ninth Commandments help us as families to grow in love.  God loves families and helps them to grow stronger.
• Activity: The four Cardinal Virtues:  Write down the Virtues and how they help us in our relationship with God and others.

• Print and complete Chapter 13 Review.

Key Concept:  All human life is sacred because it comes from God. The Fifth Commandment forbids anything that takes a human life.

Discover:  An important part of family life is showing respect to one another. The Commandments teach us about respecting God, others, and ourselves.

• Read page 200-201:  All Human Life is Sacred!
• How do you show respect for people who are different from you?  Please write down some examples.
• What does “all human life is sacred” mean to you?
• What is the definition of sacred?
• Page 202:
• How do you keep the Fifth Commandment (You shall not kill)?  The Fifth Commandment has more to it… it forbids harm to life because all human life is sacred.  This means that we must treat our own bodies with respect as well as respecting others.
• Print and complete Chapter 14 Handout: Respect Your Body.
• Page 203:  Read the Scripture:  Love of Enemies, Matthew 5:43-45.  This Scripture passage relates to anger, hatred and revenge.  Forgiveness is a way to show love to others, even to enemies.
• Write down a time when you were able to avoid hatred or revenge, even when they were provoked.

Live:

• Page 204:  we see many different ways to respect life.  How have you shown ways of respecting life this week?   
• Cut out triangular flags from sheets of paper. Write on one side of your flag one of the ways you have shown how you respect life this week and how you acted it out.
• Continue to make a flag for each day this week with a different way you are respecting life!   Thread string through your flags to create a streamer and hang the flags in your room.

Family + Faith (pages 207-208):

• Print and complete Chapter 14 Review.

Key Concept:  Because God is truth, his People are called to live in the truth.  The Eighth Commandment forbids lying.

Discover:  We have been learning that all human life is sacred and deserves respect because it comes from God. Now let’s hear about the importance of being truthful and a witness to our faith.

• Read pages 210-211:  Why was Saint Thomas More kept in prison?  How do people show they value truth?  Followers of Jesus are called to live in the truth.  Martyrs are people who die for the truths of faith.  You probably won’t be called to be a martyr.
• On pages 212-213, we see the Eighth Commandment: You shall not tell lies against your neighbor.
• On page 213 read the Scripture, John 8:31-32, 14:6.  The Eighth Commandment forbids lying.  You must make up for the harm done by any lies you tell.  Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.”

Key Concept: The liturgical year celebrates the Paschal Mystery. The seasons of the liturgical year include Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Easter, and Ordinary Time.

Discover: Now let’s talk about how Christ gave us the Sacraments to help us celebrate the Paschal Mystery all year.  Jesus shares His life and love with us.  Sacraments are special signs and celebrations that come from Jesus and allows us to share in God’s life and love.

• Read page 234:  What is a Sacrament?  God the Father sent His only son, Jesus, as a sign of His love for His people.  Each of the Seven Sacraments are effective signs of God’s life, instituted by Christ. And given to the Church, so that Jesus can continue His saving work in the world.  The visible signs and Divine actions in each celebration give grace and allow us to share in God’s work.
• Read page 235:  You can use the chart on page 314 if you like.

• Each Sacrament includes Divine action.  Please write the Divine action next to the Sacrament.
• Read the Scripture on pages 236:  Luke 22:17-20 The Last Supper.  In the Breaking of the Bread Jesus is present today just as He promised to the Apostles at the Last Supper.  The Sacrament of the Eucharist at Mass is at the heart of Christian life.  The Eucharist unites us with Jesus.  Living the Eucharist means continuing Jesus’ work in the world!  Eucharist is the Sacrament in which Jesus gives of Himself and the bread and wine become His Body and Blood.
• Read page 237:  Act of Thanksgiving:  The Eucharist unites us to Jesus. Living the Eucharist means continuing his work.

• Read the Scripture on page 244:  Luke 19:1-10; The Story of Zacchaeus.  Conversion is turning away from sin and responding to God’s love and forgiveness, like Zacchaeus in the Scripture.  Jesus shares His life and love with us.  Sacraments are special signs and celebrations that come from Jesus and allow us to share in God’s life and love.  Through the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, we receive God’s forgiveness of sins through the Church and are strengthened by grace to make peace and avoid temptation.
• Write down someone who has forgiven you and someone that you have forgiven.  Tell how you made peace with them.
• Read pages 246-247:  Anointing of the Sick brings Jesus’ healing touch to strengthen, comfort and forgive the sins of those who are seriously ill or close to death.  The Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Penance and Reconciliation celebrate God’s forgiveness and healing.
• Read the Scripture on page 247 John 9:1-38; The Man Born Blind.   God has provided us with some people to help us heal.
• First Aid Kit Collage: On construction paper draw a large red cross at the top of their paper.   Use old magazines to find, cut out and glue beneath the red cross pictures of things you find comforting when you are sick or struggling. (People talking, stuffed animals, friends, a parent’s love represented by a heart, a Bible, etc.)
• You may also draw these pictures.  God’s love offers us comfort and healing in many different ways.

Key Concept:  The Commandments call you to be generous and to have the right attitude toward possessions. Stewardship is the way we appreciate and use God’s gifts, including our time, talent, and the resources of creation.

• Read page 258:  The Scripture Luke 12:16-21; The Parable of the Rich Fool.  What does Jesus want you to know about riches?  Everything God made is good, but being too attached to possessions makes it difficult for people to love.  By setting our priorities correctly we work in the best way possible for peace and justice in God’s Kingdom.
• Read pages 260-261:  The Seventh and Tenth Commandments help us with generosity and stewardship.  They teach us about the right attitude toward material possessions and help us in generosity.  Theft, greed, and envy are sins against these Commandments.

Activity: You have many gifts to bring to the Church and the world.  We all have a responsibility to share our gifts from God.

• Pages 270-271:   How does the Church include different cultures?  Missionaries are people who help people by sharing the Word of God and by providing social services.  Activity: Message of Support.  Write or draw messages that show support for your parish’s mission work or missionaries.  You can find some Missionaries in the OLV Bulletin!

• Read Page 272:  If you were a Missionary what work would you like to do and where?
• Make a Passport:  Fold a piece of paper in half vertically and then half again horizontally to create a booklet.  This is a passport for an imaginary mission trip.  Design stamps for places you would like to visit, and draw them on an inner page of your passport. Write on another page what you would like to do on your trip. Decorate the front and back covers of their passports with symbols such as crosses, hearts, or hands, and write your name inside.  Missionaries help people all over the world. How can you do God’s work in our families, parish, or community?

Key Concept:  To spend eternity with God, we must first grow in friendship with him and accept his grace. The Last Judgment will mark God’s final triumph over evil when Christ returns in glory and judges all the living and the dead.

• The Holy Spirit helps us respond to God’s grace and grow in friendship with Him so that we may spend eternity with God.
• Heaven is a place where we spend eternal life and happiness with God.  The Gifts of the Holy Spirit helps people make good choices.
• Read page 279: The Gifts of the Holy Spirit Chart.  This chart will tell you how the Gifts of the Holy Spirit help you grow in friendship with God.  Think about how each Gift might be used to help someone your age.  Please take your time on the Chart!

• On page 280-281 read how to prepare for the Last Judgement.
• People are judged on how well they have allowed God’s grace to transform their lives. Particular judgement occurs after a person dies.  The Last Judgement happens at the end of time, when Jesus comes in glory.
• At the time of our death we are judged by God, called Particular Judgement.
• Jesus will come in glory at the end of time to judge all the living and the dead and the coming of God’s Kingdom in fullness, called the Last Judgement.
