The interfaith rotating shelter, run by Cass Community Social Services was started in 1988 due to the need for additional food and shelter for homeless persons during the winter months. From October-May, churches throughout the Detroit area would provide housing and meals for these guests. It was also their wish to have their guests leave with clean underwear and socks.
Due to COVID, the guests this year will be housed at the Cass Community Social Services shelters in Detroit. Northville First United Methodist Church (FUMC) will be organizing the meals for the week of March 5-11 and OLV has been asked to provide the meal for March 9. We will prepare a meal for 60 guests and being very COVID safe will have minimal or no contact with not only the folks at the shelter but with our own church families.
For now, we are asking your help in collecting for their basic needs. Items needed include NEW packages of men’s warm socks (sizes 10-13), men’s underwear (boxers only, sizes medium-2XL), men’s undershirts (sizes medium-2XL), women’s underwear (sizes 6-14), and women’s warm socks (sizes 7-11). Let’s help with this most basic need by collecting through Sunday, February, 27.
